My Dad's Portrait

I was a design major in university but I always considered myself to be an artist. I loved to draw and that led me to take a number of drawing classes while I was in school. When I graduated and started working as a designer, I became more reliant on photography and typography and I stopped drawing and producing art almost entirely. It's now been ten years since I left NSCAD U and I still don't draw very often but I miss it.

To commemorate my dad's life, one of my aunts asked me to draw a portrait of him and I agreed. At the time I was still pursuing a masters degree, working full time, freelancing through Glitterati and raising two beautiful daughters so I didn't think that I had the time to take it on, but it was something that I really wanted to do, for her, for him and for myself. It took a lot longer than I expected it to, but I was determined to finish it and I'm glad that I did.

DalTheatre 2012-13 Season Poster Design

This is a poster that we designed and illustrated for DalTheatre's 2012-13 season and we recently had the pleasure of attending a rehearsal for their first production, "The Ends Of The Earth". We were able to meet everyone that will be involved with the play and some that will be working on the other three productions coming later in the season. This is the first time that we were able to experience a production before designing the poster so it should be interesting to see how that changes what we come up with. It was great seeing that many creative disciplines in one place working toward one goal.  One confirmed change is that unlike previous years, the look of the forth-coming posters will be dramatically different from the season poster due to a change in creative direction. We can't reveal anymore but we're excited for the challenge.

April Baird Interview - Future Glitterati

April Baird is the boss lady of April M Designs, a creative studio based in Halifax and I met her a few years back when she helped me with some graphic design projects. April’s self-described, “girly and cute” artwork that she executes across a number of mediums is dope and I’m a big fan. Something that I get really excited about is seeing people create lanes for themselves when there isn’t one and April has been doing just that. She recently hosted and organized the 2^nd annual Art vs Craft, craft show that featured over 50 vendors. Be Glitterati had the opportunity to be one of the vendors at Art vs Craft this year and I had a blast meeting the creative’s and craft enthusiasts who attended.

Where did you grow up?

Green Hill, Nova Scotia which is in Pictou County. It’s a small farming community. I love and hate it.

After a few years of consideration we finally folded and opened an Etsy shop for Be Glitterati! For now we'll be selling graphic prints on wood and paintings. In time we plan to have the shirts available through there as well. In the mean time you can browse our shop here.

La Ronde Poster

Some of you might remember some posts I made on Twitter and Facebook about drawing naughty things. Well, those drawings turned into a full on original painting for this poster. This was easily one of the most fun projects I've ever worked on. Thank you to DalTheatre for letting me be free to swag out once again. Oh and check out the show. Blood Wedding Poster

For my latest poster design for DalTheatre I decided to channel my inner Picasso while keeping the look consistent with my previous designs for this season. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Based on the research I did for this design, this looks to be an exciting show!

While We're Young Poster

My latest poster design for DalTheatre. Now that I've had a chance to step back and see this poster objectively I'm not super happy with how I designed it but I love the illustration. The illustration took me way than I estimated it would but I think that it was worth it. Hopefully the patrons do too. Make sure you get out and see this play. It should be great!

DalTheatre Season 2011-12 Brochure

I had the pleasure of working on the season brochure/poster for DalTheatre again this year. The great thing about working on these projects is that I really get to push myself as an illustrator. I'm actually finding that the amount of design time I put into this work pales in comparison to the time that  goes into planning and art work creation. Shown below is the final art work and some of the process sketches that helped me to the design solution I chose.

The Giving Tree For Sale

Glitterati Duane x Fresh Goods

My piece inspired by Mal's song, "The Giving Tree" is currently on display at Fresh Goods Sneakers and Apparel in Halifax. These guys carry some dope brands including, Nooka, G-Shock, The Hundreds and Shwood. They also support local brands like my personal favorite, The Quarrelsome Yeti and hopefully Be Glitterati *wink *wink. Snuggle Bunny Crew T-Shirt

This is a t-shirt design based on my oldest daughter's crew of "Snuggle Bunnies". The original pink Snuggle Bunny has been her favorite toy since she was a baby so it's only fitting that I do some artistic renditions of him. To my dismay, my daughter got a paint stain on the shirt within an hour of wearing it for the first time. But at least she did it in the pursuit of art... right? I have another Snuggle Bunny illustration in progress that I will upload soon!
